Information & photographs by Linda Findlay (daughter) & Katherine Findlay (granddaughter)

Alfred Banks, known as Dick Banks, was from Maryport in Cumbria. He was very young when he joined up – he lied about his age and joined the Navy at 16. In the photo he is about 20 and a chief petty officer (photo of crew; Dick is third row up, second from right wearing a tie).

The picture below is of his ship (a minesweeper) and was painted by the Captain, who sent copies to all his crew members at Christmas some time after the war. Thank you to Dick’s family for allowing us to use this beautiful image and, if anyone knows the name of the Captain please contact us.
