Donald John Macdermid

Donald was born on 10th August 1926 in Invergordon and worked in the shoe manufacturing industry prior to being called up on 22 December 1943. Following training at HMS Raleigh and Drake he was posted to the Escort Carrier HMS Campania on 7 August 1944 and served on her until 15 June 1947.

While serving aboard the carrier five round trips to Russia were undertaken escorting convoys JW60/RA60JW61A/RA61AJW62/RA62JW64/RA64 & JW65/RA65 between September 1944 and March 1945. He was discharged from his Royal Navy service on 22 August 1947.

In 2013 Donald was awarded the Arctic Star by the UK Government, and the Russian bravery award of the Admiral Ushakov medal. He lived more recently in Chatham, Kent with his partner Peggy for the past 42 years. Donald passed away 8 April 2019 aged 92.
