Michael Francis, HMS Obedient

Michael served on HMS Obedient (G48) starting on July 4th 1944. From this time, Obedient  was involved in RA61, RA62 and RA66.

The following photos show him on his 18th birthday; another photo of him on the ship (star above his head) with his shipmates. This was on his 18th birthday (July 4, 1944) and directly after photo was taken he fell backwards out of view. Can we blame the Royal Navy rum?

The last image show his medal, left to right are….1939-45 War Medal, 1939-45 War Star and the Atlantic Star with small France and Germany clasp.

I don’t have much in the way of stories that he told me. Spent a lot of time in the North Sea. Chipping ice off hand rails etc was an important job.

It is important both for Russia and the United Kingdom to preserve memories of this most heroic page of our War time Alliance as a tribute to the Veterans and for the sake of future generations.
